Hi Luke
Here is the nub of the problem. The distinction between "operating system"
and "operating environment:".
Dick Pick felt that "Pick Systems has provided a state-of-the-art operating
system" - Advanced Pick introduction. I am more tempted to take Dick's call
than Graeme's. More importantly off-the-cuff remarks like Graeme's get
picked up by the general public and SQL proponents in particular and used to
slam our use of Pick/Multi-Value, call it what you will. Selling is hard
enough without this - the last time I had to defend my use was Xmas 2006,
and that from clowns evaluating our software who use Cobol and Isam
themselves.

He is the one that came in like a raging bull. I listed some of the
current Pick successes from U2 through Cache to D3 and QM and got a
tirade about it not being Pick. I referred him to Dawn's site and he
said it did not mention Pick. He sent the article and I suggested he do a
more modern one demonstrating his knowledge of Pick now. Apparently I
impugned his professionalism by saying that he was wrong in suggesting
that Pick was forgotten.

Did nobody notice two important key words "Operating System"? Pick as an
O/S has been a dead and buried for lo these many years, barring only a few
small shops with ancient boxes stuck here and there.

In any case, be honest. If he'd substituted the word "largely" for "long",
he'd still be right, even if he was talking about MV databases generally.
Even at the height of its popularity, Pick was a much-overlooked
technology.

Luke

Hi
What a fascinating load of cobblers.
Graeme Philipson states
"Some bordered on the hysterical. One nutter accused me of declaring Pick
dead, and abused me for a lack of professionalism and of not doing my
homework. When I pointed out that Pick is no longer an operating system, and
that it has several different names, he became more hysterical."

This is a summary of his own irrational comments in his emails to me. He
managed to translate my heading "Pick Dead - No Way" into an assault on
his professionalism and the following as hysterical

"Pick now better known as Multi-Value has millions of users world wide and
will undoubtedly replace RDBMS as products move on. It currently represents
40% of IBM database income through their U2 offering. It is a major
European player through Northgate, the purchasers of the original Reality.
Cache, Jbase, D3, Revelation and many others come to mind. The latest QM
from Ladybridge in the UK runs on Windows, Linux, Windows Mobile 5 and can
even switch machines using a memory stick licence.

As for knock-offs, the Java engine uses exactly the same 2 byte paging
engine approach and XML is a fairly naive implementation of the model. The
terabyte search capabilities of some Pick based search engines are
phenomenal. I suggest that you have a look at www.tincat-group.com and bring
yourself up to date."

I see that he claims to have been assailed and insulted by everyone from
Apple to IBM and probably Xerox. Methinks he has a very thin skin and a
very limited knowledge of the markets that he writes about.
