Default BASIC subroutines as Web Services - 06-13-2010 , 04:55 PM

I've just posted a blog about a new product that will be offered soon.
It renders BASIC subroutines as Web Services. I'd like to discuss the
features and applications with VARs who have larger end-user sites,
and with end-user IT Management.

See blog for more information.

Are you going to setup free access for developers to play with it ?
To me that would be a good way of getting buy-in and expanding a list
of possible uses.

Thanks Will. The goal now is to work with developers to identify
what's required for a first release. When the product is ready, yes,
there will be free trials.

This is being developed for VARs and end-users who have real needs,
right now. I'd like to ensure their requirements are covered for
early and successful adoption. When their needs are satisfied, then
the product will be a better tool for everyone, so my current focus is
on discussion with people in this group.

That is a different group from those who want to find an application
for a new tool, those who want to add "something" to their software
but they're not really sure what that should be. I will work with
this group separately.

For both groups, now is a good time to talk with end-users about data
exchanges with their trading partners, about the next step for their
IT development. Don't talk "technology", talk about how current data
exchange processes work, what data you need to exchange now and in the
near future, how much time and money it all costs, and about whether
you'd like to reduce those costs. I will be happy to partner with
VARs and IT management to discuss these topics.

For sure, this is worth chasing, and as a foundation -- is very
extensible. I've benefited extensively, as I've largely been doing
this since 1998 in a product called Bridge2Web (in an architecture
that easily handles both HTTP & WSDL requests.) While I no longer
market the technology externally, I continue to use it in solutions.
The main idea is to create a front-end dispatcher that simply
marshalls the web request/post variables into Basic subroutine
variables. When you chase this, you'll quickly end up architecting in
session management, security (encryption and role-privileges), ETL
mapping, context mapping, rewrite capabilities, non-blocking
asynchronous multi-threading, et al. When you have most of the core
pieces in place, you can chase multiple paths outward, eg.
constructing a SOAP/WSDL management layer (eg. to allow seamless
services integration to utilizing generalized tools, such as using
SoapUI) . There's a parallel thread going on in CDP regarding
PHANTOMS (including the Frosty opera). Its solution fits elegantly
here, especially for handling non-blocking requests. (Start with the
"Z"-processor. There's a few good tricks, but the easter-eggs are
worth the pursuit! )
