Default To Aussies & others, requesting a favor - 01-17-2006 , 12:57 AM

I said I wouldn't do this every week, but I'm feeling insecure (did I
say that outloud?) Maybe I should just ask if it would be OK if I do
announce my blog each week?

Well, I just posted my second blog entry and I'm about to hit the sack.
If anyone gets a chance to read it, you could put a smile on my face
when I go online in the morning by leaving a comment there if you have
one (choose Other instead of anonymous to leave a real or fake name).
Shoot me an e-mail if anything is amiss with the blog or related
example (dwolt at tincat-group dot com)

After reading the Peter and Bruce dialog this week, I'm not feeling
like I'm wasting your time by writin' this. Thanks in advance. --dawn

Just to clarify: the Bruce spoken of here is Bruce Nichol, not me (brings to
mind a Monty Python routine) *grin*

I just thought "Bruce" was a generic term for an Aussie male, like
Sheila for a woman. smiles. --dawn

Unfortunately, these days, "Bruce" is more aligned to Taswegians....
Everybody calls me "brother" and claims me as a relly when I fall off
the aeroplane there.... ~8^))

And to correct another apparent misconception, Dawn, it's "a sheila"
when speaking *of* them, out of ear-shot, not "Sheila" speaking *to*
them, face-to-face, unless you want to lose yours....

I was aware it had derogatory connotations, but I don't know what they
are. Sexist? Sexual? Other? What would you guess would be the best
description in US English?

I gather that it is perfectly acceptable there to call a man Bruce,
even to his face, however.
How odd. smiles. --dawn

A friend of mine has just returned from England, where she was visiting
her ageing uncle, who happens to be the very Bruce of Monty Python fame.
Apparently, the Pythons got it into their heads that, since they had an
Australian professor named Bruce, logically all Australians should be
named Bruce.

It's not really derogatory, but it's not exactly the best form of
address either. It seems to have picked up some of the same taint as,
for example, the American colloquial term "broad". Probably more through
the nature of those using it than anything.

Generally only if his name is Bruce, or if he's a Python fan. By the
same token, I felt no embarrassment in referring to my old neighbour as
Sheila, because that was her name.

I do sometimes use the expression, as in "you sheilas", but only in
joking terms.

Luke
