Default Which Apache is which? - 10-14-2003 , 03:15 PM

We are setting up a customers with web capabilities and need Apache to be
running. The customer is running on D3 7.1.0.RS on AIX 4.2 or 4.3. Apache
has not been installed. On the www.apache.org web site there are a number of
choices. I need to know which version of Apache to install.

Your help is much appreciated.

Jeff,

if your are running on AIX, consider using the IBM HTTP Server which you can
downaload from IBM.

There are 1.3.x and 2.x versions available. As to choosing which, 1.3 is
probably more stable, but 2 has exciting features. What do you need Apache
to do?

It is a customised version of Apache, but prebuilt and easy to install. You
can get IBM redbooks about it from www.redbooks.com.

HTH,

Craig

Thanks for the suggestion, Craig. I am not well versed in this stuff and
already have all the scripts written and working using Apache. Most of my
other customers are on Linux and Apache is included with Red Hat. For
support purposes I would like all of them to have the same configuration.

Although AIX comes with its own web server, Apache release for AIX is
apache_1.3.26-000964804C00-ibm-aix4.3.tar.gz.
(Available NOW at a mirror near you!)

However... since IBM will end support for ver. 4.3x you should use the IBM
proprietary web server to avoid upgrade headaches!

Then again... if Apache is the comfort zone...

Dang! Decisions, decisions!

Install the 1.3.x release as its the stable public release version.... and
would be the best one for your clients site as all of the add in modules
such as php, mysql etc are known to work with this version.

The 2.4.x version is for developers who want to test the software internally
for bugs.

Or look at the pre-compiled versions for AIX at:
http://www.bullfreeware.com/

There's Apache and *many* more smit-installable (very slick, very nice) AIX
packages free for the download.

I've used many of them on AIX 4.3 and they've worked as palnned.

Jeffrey,

you might still want to have a look the "IBM HTTP Server" (not domino).

It refers to itself as "IBM HTTP Server powered by Apache".

It is Apache, packaged and compiled by IBM. (so it uses apachectl,
httpd.conf etc just like Apache from www.apache.org but modifies AIX start
up scripts appropriately etc etc).

By the way, just in case you are using ModPerl, it will not link correctly
on AIX (a problem aknowledged by IBM in the FAQs for the IBM HTTP server).
I have seen compiled ports from Bull etc, but never got any to work under
AIX 4.3.x.

The bull packages are always excellent, but the IBM package comes with
manuals and a support website and either way its Apache.
