Default AD: Convert print output to pdf and email the results - 02-15-2007 , 11:14 AM

ReportMailer captures the output that would normally go to a printer and
processes it to pdf and/or txt formats before emailing or storing it.

It is very flexible and different reports can reach different recipients or
groups by using trigger text contained in each report.

No reports need to be modified and there is no impact on your application as
all the work is done after the report has been produced.

Once the data is in pdf/txt format it is easy to search for any piece of
information and also to distribute it to other interested parties.

Navigate to www.progenix.co.uk and take a closer look under 'Software
Services'. Please use the 'Contact' page to ask any questions and we'll be
pleased to respond to you.

Regards to all.

Looks interesting. How does it capture the report? Will it work on D3/Linux?
How much does it cost? Does anyone else out there have a similar product?

Do any Linux-based MV systems these days support SP-PRINTTO?

Generically you would setup a print-to-file LPR/CUPS device, along with a
D3 shared printer form for it. Then you can SP-ASSIGN/PRINT to that spool,
run a2ps on the 'printed' text file, use ps2pdf to conver the PostScript
file, and finally send the PDF using any of the command line mail tools I.E.
"mutt". Of course, if you don't rely on the D3 spooler you can do a lot more
fancy things! I rarely use the spooler in D3 now. I write data directly to
Linux files and print using the Linux printing system. That way I can do
neat documentation and imaging stuff with HTML, PS and PDF content.

PrintWizard from Anzio.com has been pretty popular in this market.

Anyone who knows how to send spooler output to an OS file or socket
can capture such output, maybe as postscript source, then run it
through ghostscript to convert to PDF, then use any of the email
solutions people here like to email the reports as required. I've
offered solutions over the years for doing this sort of thing but most
people insist on writing all the code themselves. Some succeed, some
don't. The successful solutions are often unmaintainable expect by
the individuals who wrote them.

I offered a solution for a while (resale plus services, not developed
here) that would completely reformat plain text reports into pretty
graphical reports (via templates). These could then be collated with
other reports, distributed via PDF, etc. It sounds similar to what
Progenix is offering. It was quite a pricey solution for larger
volume shops. I see Sierra-Bravo.com is offering something similar,
might be from the same vendor, dunno. This could also be the same
software Progenix is selling too, or completely different, dunno.

I'm curious about these sorts of reporting offerings. What exactly
does each of them do and what do they not do? And for what price?
For example, the solution I was selling started at about $5k for a
basic system that would handle a lot of needs, $13k for a heavyweight
solution, and services above that could easily run much higher. For
larger companies that need to do sorting, binding, report aggregation
(combining data from MV reports with Oracle, etc), graphical
manipulation of legacy reports, and distribution, this isn't a big
deal (especially when it involves zero code changes), but most Pick
shops can't deal with the numbers and I decided to back away from a
product that didn't conform to this market's "fiscal sensibilities".
It would be good to know what Pick shops want, what offerings are
available that address their needs, and what pricing structures this
market will bear.
