Default 3-D TEK - 01-25-2006 , 07:00 PM

Why does 3-D TEK seem to have a monopoly on pick job listings? In
pickjobs.net, they have 9 different listings. This company is a pain
to deal with, because they practically require an autobiography from
you before they even submit you to a client.

Maybe that's why they seem to have a monopoly. At least part of a head
hunter's job is to qualify candidates before submitting them. I can't
remember the source but a good quote that seems to apply here -

"We judge ouselves by our potential - others judge us by our
accomplishments."

For a couple years I've been frustrated with 3D-Tek having such a lead
role in our community without any real understanding of this market.
It's obvious they try but they're never quite there. To fix the
problem I've initiated an effort with Emil Owen, one of the principles
of 3D-Tek to ensure that they are more in tune with our products, the
skills that people have, and the skills that companies are looking
for. My recent inquiry about multVerse and other products was related
to this effort. Despite some reservations I've expressed in this
forum about 3D-Tek, I've found Emil to be quite open to changes which
will benefit all of us, and we've already made some progress.

As an example, the list of products that you can choose in their
JobAlert section has already been dramatically expanded and
significant corrections were made. Another update will be made in a
couple weeks to make it fairly complete for our industry. This simple
beginning will allow MV job seekers and employers to match-up with one
another much more effectively.

Other changes we've been discussing would allow people to enter more
than just four skills, since the MV crowd tends to be a diversified
bunch, and to break up "skills" into DBMS Platforms, Languages,
Applications, etc. As an example, I personally don't like the idea of
having to choose between listing jBASE, ASP.NET, and RPL when they're
completely unrelated and all just as valuable in defining my
experience.

Another related change is to expand the number of write-in skills
which a candidate can enter, and to audit what people are entering on
a regular basis. This will help us to identify general skills that
should be in the selectable category lists, and keep on top of supply
and demand trends. By changing the lists to include common write-ins,
prospective employers will have a better chance at identifying
eligible candidates.

You're probably wondering what I get out of this. We're considering
offering very low-cost optional add-on services:
- One of which will help employers to better craft their ads - we all
know how useless this is: "Pick OS help wanted". If I can help a Pick
developer to find a job, that's one more person and company that's
still in this community to buy products and services from the rest of
us.
- As we identify the needs of end-users, I can recommend products and
services which are available in our market that they may not know
about. I'm frequently commissioned to provide technology and market
analysis, and I've been providing free referrals to MV vendors at no
cost to them for years. This new marketing effort will help to
formalize this relationship with some vendors.

If you have other suggestions for how 3D-Tek can better address the
needs of this community and you don't feel comfortable bringing your
concerns directly to them, I'll offer to represent your interest in
the hope of improving the process. Please feel free to e-mail me
about anything here.
