Default 100% CPU usage - 05-30-2007 , 09:07 AM

I am using MVBase 2.0 and I just have one question.

Why does my CPU usage go to 100% when I print? Is there any way to
stop this? 3 times a day we print a lot of documents and when we do
you can imaging how slow the system runs then.

Hi,

The best way around the problem is to offload the workstation component
that runs the printer onto a network PC. It doesn't have to anything
powerful - we used to use an old Pentium 90! [That was on mvBASE 1.3.02
but I'm sure 2.0 is the same].

Cheers,

Brian

IIRC, mvBase is an updated version of GA Zebra which was R83 based.

If you are using parallel printers, that's a big part of your problem. The
system (at the os level) has to send the data to the printer and then wait
for a reply. During that wait, the system is single user.

There were some commands like SET-LPTR. that were designed to increase
printer performance by changing some numbers around so the spooler processes
didn't get their time slice so often.

As another poster stated, removing printer services from the one computer
will free things up a lot.

The less time it spends printing, the more time it can do something
productive.

And you effectively make the print job finish faster if you buy a printer buffer
box that has gobs of memory... The parport can stream bytes much faster than
the printer can get them on paper. Or buy more ram for your printer itself, but
that money goes down the rathole when the printer wears out...

Speaking of printers wearing out, I notice low-end printer makers are dropping
parport interfaces like a hot potato. Those old x86 computers may last and last,
but you're sol if you can't buy replacement printers for them.

Mark:

Are you implying that printing my reimbursement check is not productive?
:-)
