Default Paradox Day report - 03-20-2006 , 04:26 PM

Hi

I would like to thank all those who joined in the irc chat channel today.
Most everyone gave more than a fair slice of their time, the whole day in
fact for many. Friendships were made and cemented.

It was a pity that there were not more visitors, but we had the following.
I think this is the complete list.

JanM Jan from Belgium
Regis53 from France
gm Gunter from Germany
LarryD Larry from the USA
U4846 from the USA
Egbert from Germany
Anne myself from SA

So you can see that we were not busy, but people did enjoy meeting and
having a mixed chat on technical and other matters.

Promotion of the event was not a good point of my plan, it was in fact non-
existant. We can give this some thought for the next year. In 2007 we'll
have another irc meeting and ensure that it is more widely announced.

Once again I would personally like to thank every one who donated their
time, they made the event the (modest) success that it was.

Special thanks to Gunter for his help on technical problem.

It would have worked better on a non-working day. I expect most in
the US had work to do and/or had to do it behind a firewall that
wasn't about to open up IRC ports and/or something similar.

Somehow I missed that it was coming, but when notified I was just too
wrapped up in other stuff. I'm glad to hear it went well.

All:

Sorry I missed it - just heard of it about 4 p.m. EST, & we knock off about
4:30. And I am indeed behind a corporate firewall, so it would have been
no-go in any event. Besides, my French is extraordinarily rusty!

Tks

Anyone remember 'chatting' with PIM?

We even transferred 'Hello' voice recordings and photos with it.

Liz and I pretty much got married because of it!

Anyone still using it within their company?

:-)

Tony,

Do you think it might help us get along better with our creditors? :-)

Hi, Liz,

And thanks for the suggestion.

I had thought of this but felt that too many would perhaps have "no
computer switched on, gone fishing" weekends. Any comments on this for the
future, anyone?

The Epiknet web-site java and cgi IRC scripts don't, as far as i know, faze
corporate fire walls, or do they? Since I'm not behind one I can't truly
say.

Yes, we all had work to do and even I sandwiched some in, but we didn't
insist that everyone sign on from 9 to 5. I imagined that most would find
it easier to steal a few minutes from work than from the family.

Very sorry that of all people you couldn't make it, I wanted to thank you
personally for all the help you have been in the past. So consider this a
public thank you a few days behind schedule.

Best regards
Anne

The standard version was free.

That version is by subscription only.

Anne,

The only thing I've heard about IRC, other than teenagers using it to
chat, is that hackers use it to control bots. I'm quite certain most
corporate firewalls will block IRC.

I do like the idea, it's just that there's no way I could do it from
work, it sounded over by the time I got home from work, and I'm not
certain I want anything related to IRC on my computer....
