Hi,

Although not much interest shown, I have registered an irc channel
#paradox on irc.epiknet.org for Paradox Day

Monday is a normal working day for me, but I will be around most of the
time. We are 2 hours ahead of UK, an hour ahead of France, 6 - 8 hours
difference depending on location in North America. The land of Oz, the
East side over by Brisbane, is about 8 hours ahead of us I think. I'll
clock on around 09:30 our time and stay there until around 17:00 when
I'll pack up, go home, and reconnect in between feeding myself and the
dogs. I'll be there until around 23:00 when I plan to slow down. I hope
to catch you sometime.

The object is to be able to meet and say hi to others, preach to the
converted, commiserate together, and celebrate the day. Even if you only
have a short time, please log in and see. If you have a permanent
connection, then you are welcome to stay there and help out all day.

As mentioned, load up your favourite irc client. If you haven't used irc
in a while, look at X-chat at http://www.silverex.org/news/

Follow your nose to log onto the epiknet irc network, and in the one line
text entry area at the bottom type

/join #paradox

If you prefer there is an OK irc client built into Mozilla.

If you are really challenged then

http://www.epiknet.org/chat/

features a java applet to connect you.

Sorry if it is in French, but that's the way it is. Enter your choice of
nickname in "Votre pseudo" near the top, left of centre, and "paradox" in
the # box bottom right, then click "Entrer dans la chat" just beneath
your nickname. Be patient, Java irc takes a while to connect. Thinking of
everything these guys even feature a cgi chat connection on the very
bottom line if the Java one won't go.

Irc comprises two main items.

1 A network that you connect to with an address irc.<somethingorother>
rather like you connect to an ftp server
2 The various channels used for chatting on that network that you join
when logged on to the network, in our case #paradox.

Since you will be unlikely to be joining the irc community as a hobby, I
give below the settings to connect you directly to the Paradox Day channel
when you fire up X-Chat with no further ado.

At this stage you have installed X-Chat, maybe already entered some info
asked for during the install setup that I cover again below. You'll know
what you entered so those items can be left if you are happy with them.

1 First lets set up the network. When opening X-Chat a window "Server
List" opens. Make appropriate entries for nicknames. Don't use something
common, all regular names are taken and registered already. Also enter a
'username' and 'real name', none of these need be real if you want to stay
anonymous.

Lower down, cycle through the list of networks to find Epiknet, butI don't
think it is a default entry, so then you must click on the "Add" button.
Rename with usual editing keystrokes "New Server" to "Epiknet" then click
on the "Edit" button to bring up a second window ....

"Edit New Network"
a. In the area "Servers for New Network" click the "edit" button and change
the entry to read "irc.epiknet.org/6667".
b Check "use global user information" if not already checked.
c Check "auto connect to this network at startup"
d Lower down insert "#paradox" in the area "Channels to join".
e leave everything else as is

Click on the "Close" button and you will be back at the first "Server
Window".

2 Make sure you have an internet connection

3 Click on the "Connect" button and you should join Epiknet and #paradox
automagically. If you close X-Chat these settings should also enable you
to join automagically on starting X-Chat.

If you get logged onto the Epiknet server, that is the first window that
comes up with a whole host of wording that scrolls by, and you don't get
joined to #paradox more or less instantly, in the one-line text entry area
at the bottom of the window type:

/join #paradox ... and hit Enter.

In the event of network problem, unlikely, but you may end up at the
network window, so just do the /join #paradox again.

If you choose a registered nickname you will probably be assigned an
automated guest name.

I hope this suffices. If there are problems post to this group which I'll
monitor during the day.

1. How do I enable identd in X-Chat?

UNIX:
Identd isn't actually apart of X-Chat. You will need to download and
install your own ident server. Most distributions, including RedHat, come
with an ident server program called pidentd. Make sure it is enabled in
/etc/xinetd.conf or read you distribution's documentation. As an
alternative, you can try this experimental identd server: xchat_auth

WINDOWS:
The win32 version of X-Chat comes with a built-in identd server. It is
enabled by default, but can be disabled with /set identd 0.

Larry, try this:
1 - Type your nickname in "Votre pseudo"
2 - Go to the bottom of this page :"Un problème de connexion ?
Connectez-vous par IRC"
3 - Click on : Connectez-vous par IRC
4 - Then click on Lister les salons (quite left top of the page)
5 - Type "paradox" on the search part and Enter
6 - Then click on "Joindre"
