Or... maybe they were Paradox tables but had some unsupported field types
(as Liz pointed out earlier).

Hi, I have a quick, very basic question. I am trying to acquire some
data for research purposes. The DB administrator claims that the data
are stored in Paradox and that it would be extremely labor intensive to
extract them. I am not a DB administrator, but that seems to be an
inaccurate representation.
We export and import paradox / excel practically every day. Manually and
under program control. For a wide variety of purposes, mostly to generate
or take in information needed by or produced by suppliers.

The process is simple and almost instantaneous.

If the tables were password protected, would Access produce the same error
message? Or...other?

Doug,

Here's how I do it.

1. If I'm going to import the Data into Excel, I first export the Data to an
ASCII Delimited
text file from within Paradox. I then import the text file from in
Excel. If there is a
Password on the table, you will encounter it before you can export the
data.

2. If I'm going to import the Data onto Access, if the Paradox table is
Password Protected,
a dialog will appear, asking for the Password. Once the Password is
entered, then the
import process begins.

3. Note, If I want the data to end up in an Excel spread sheet, I actually
prefer to importing
the Paradox data into Access first rather then exporting the ASCII
Delimited Text from Paradox.
Access will then allow me to create an Excel export of the data. Nice
and clean.

I was incorrect earlier when I said that Excel can "Import" Paradox data
directly. To import Paradox
tables, you must use Access first, then export to Excel.
