Default Paradox 8 Runtime and MS Vista Beta 2 - 07-01-2006 , 06:59 PM

I have an application which I created using Pdx8. My installation CD
was created using the PDE. As I have a vested interest in the future
of the app while re-creating it as web based system I thought I should
at lease test what I have using MS Vista.

I didn't wish to install Vista over my XP installation so I purchased
a new HD along with 2Gb of RAM and upgraded my PC with the new hardware
and installed Vista on the new HD.

Vista took 45mins to install which was straight forward and error free.
The only driver not installed was for the sound. Vista offered to
search the net for a suitable driver and found and installed it without
any fuss.

I immediately proceeded to install my application using one of my
normal distribution CD's created with the PDE.

I did not encounter and problems with the installation and was
pleasantly surprised with how fast the process was compared with XP. I
concluded at the time that the faster installation was due to the fact
that I had not yet installed the Firewall and Virus software. The 2Gb
of RAM probably helped also.

My first attempt at running my application was foiled by Vista
security. After setting the appropriate permissions the app fired up
normally. I was impressed with how fast and crisply the forms and
reports appeared on the screen.

I have two printers, a HP deskjet 930c and a HP business inkjet 1100d.
With the 1100d there is no printer driver included with Vista Beta2.
However there is a driver for the 930c.

I downloaded the driver from the HP web site for the 1100d (the
standard XP driver) and attempted to install it with no success. The
printer appears with the other drivers but crashes the application when
attempting to print using it.

The 930c printer works perfectly with the testing of the application
done so far.

I have not attempted to network the app as yet and there may be
problems there.

I am very encouraged with my early results and will post any problems I
discover in the future.

Has anyone done any serious testing with Paradox and Vista as yet?

John

Thanks a lot for your report and very much looking forward to more
information as you go.

I don't think there are many here that have the time/currage/possibility to
test Paradox on Vista, but I think it is something some of us will have to
do sooner or later.

Anders

This is my second try at Vista: I ran the compatibility advisor once,
no major problems identified. 45 minutes install time on a AMD XP2600+
1.5G Mem

1 try) I broke a mirrored set and upgraded XP pro on one drive(on IDE
Raid card):
a) Had to stop the install and remove AVG.
b) Balked at enabling both Nvidia adapters (dual display). Finally got
it to work, then it broke again.
c) Could not get Turtle Beach Montegro DDL Sound to work consistently,
TB control panel no function). Auto update mis-identified (known
problem with this card) and installed the wrong drivers, rollback was
not clean.
d) LOST ALL Netware IPX connectivity (NW4.2). Reports are "There will
be NO IPX support from Novell or Microsoft" . *Warning*
e) IE became unstable (100% usage/blue screens).

2 try) Clean install (Std IDE port): Much better .
a) Still Turtle Beach Sound issues (there went my optical to my home
theatre receiver). Removed card.
b)could not install RAID driver (to read files off other (saved) XP
drive). I finally got the driver to install by using the Recovery
console,"load driver", then Vista discovered the card and asked for
the driver.
c) Network MFC issues: Brother MFC 8820DN, Only printing functioning
(No Network Scan or Fax), No Beta drivers/software available.
d) Older HP JetDirect Ex3+ not found, (served 3 Netware Print queues)
e) *Fragile* video. I did /something/ and now My dual cards , now
clash (1 disabled)

Hey! It's a beta
I still want to try Pdox DOS <G> on it.
