Default Paradox 3.0 - 03-28-2007 , 10:00 AM

I work part time for a middle school that uses an educational package
called Plato. This application uses Paradox 8 as its RDBMS engine. I
want to be able to open the tables and create customized queries and
reports.

I haven't used Paradox since Access came out but I have an old copy
Borland Paradox 3.0 on floppies. Is this historical relic capable of
opening the database? If not, do I have any alternative to purchasing
WordPerfect Office Suite Professional?

no, you can't use DOS 3.0 on a modern machine.. why can't you just use
Paradox 8 interactively?.. if you need manuals, disks, etc., look on my
Paradox Sales page..

No, not DOS 3 (although I probably have a copy of that somewhere too),
PARADOX 3.
as Liz said, you're just mistaking the term we use.. Paradox for DOS,
Version Three, will NOT run under Windows..

You may recall that Borland bought this RDBMS from ANSA sometime around
'85 or so.
yeah, I recall that.. I was there (g)

beyond that, you really DO want full Paradox eight, so that you're doing
everything in the same version.. not required, but it IS easier..

Not to mention - if you have the source code to that program, and happen to
open and save a form or report - that program will NOT open that form or
report ever again (or until you get someone to translate it back to readable
by version 8 with version 9).

So, having runtime 8 and opening some files (if source are used) in Paradox
11 sp27 (x3) could be a disaster for your company.

Are you saying that I will not be able to accomplish my goals with the
version of Paradox I asked the school to purchase?
as was previously mentioned.. if you use P11, do NOT open any app-related
forms, reports, etc. in P11.. otherwise, P11 will be able to open the
tables, query, report, etc..

Bob,

If you're just wanting to extract data from the Paradox tables and create
reports, you might want to consider these options:

1. Use MS Excel to Import the Paradox data into a
Worksheet, then create your Reports using Excel.

2. Use MS Access to Import the Paradox data into
an Access Database then create your reports using
Access.

I would say the Excel would be much quicker to work with.

To import Paradox Data into either Excel or Access, you need to install
Microsoft Paradox Driver. Usually Paradox Drivers are not installed during
a "Recommended" installation option (which most people use). To install
the Microsoft Paradox Drivers, you would probably have to do the following:

1. Select "Install / Update Software" from your
control panel.

2. Pick Excel or Access, depending on which one
you decide to use.

3. Browse around the additional options which aren't
checked until you find the Paradox Drivers... then
check it.

So long as you only "Import" the Paradox data into Excel or Access, you will
not effect the data in your Paradox application. Once imported, you can do
what ever you want with it.

Just an idea.

Quote:
Undelivered forms and reports (those with .fsl or.rsl extensions) can be
opened with earlier versions of PDOXWIN.
NOT TRUE in all cases!!!

Quote:
When the developer delivers the form (.*dl extension) only the version
that the forms were delivered in can open the forms and reports.
If a source form/report (.fsl,.rsl) is opened and saved in px3, Paradox 8
will NOT be able to open even the SOURCE version.

If the application running on runtime uses any source files, there is a
potential disaster waiting if this isn't understood.

It is NOT only about the delivered version - of some file types.

I didn't think there was a PDOXWIN 3.0, I thought 3.0 was a DOS
I thought the app that was built for them uses pdoxwin 8.

But he has access to 3.0 pdoxDOS and was asking if that dos version could do
stuff with the tables in pdoxwin 8.

Who is confused, you or I?
