Default Old project / new server - Pdox 8, file name too long - 01-09-2009 , 11:23 AM

My client is running Pdox 8 on Windows XP machines. Until recently
(about 2 months ago) the system was running fine - with the usual
corrupt tables every now and then, but basically okay. In the last
couple of months there have been all sorts of problems, which seem to
be server related. So.. they decided to move the system onto a brand
new server.

We have everything pointing where it should. Within Pdox we cannot
open any file with a name that is more than 8 characters long. The
path is a one letter drive name which maps directly to the server
(which is named "Mail-1"). So our longest file names + path have no
more than 20 characters.

We compared the new and old server settings and permissions and they
are identical.

What am I missing?

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Barb

No, 'usual' and 'corrupt tables' do NOT go with Paradox; not usually :-)

Well, maybe.

Huh? That is NOT normal.

What does this all mean? Where does '20 characters' come from?

What kind of server was the old, and what the new? Operating systems.

Full Paradox, or Runtime?

In the BDE Admin, what is 'Local Share' set to?

What operating systems do your workstations use?

How many workstations?

Well, you said before that you were having problems with the old settings
(corrupt tables), so copying the settings may not have been the best path.

Can you answer the above? Likely there will be others, and likely they'll
have MANY questions.

Bear with us, so we can get a picture of your setup/situation.

Sorry, see now XP.

Are they ALL running XP? No Windows '98 machines left in the mix, by chance?

Hi Tony,

Thanks for replying. My answers are under yours:

--- Although I checked the BDE and register settings, I believe that
this is a simple Working Directory change.

--- 20 characters just to say that the file name + path is "small".
When I researched this (before I posted here) the number I saw on
posts related to maximum Pdox name + path lengths is 80 characters.
(This for pdox 5.)

8 (or so - client is in a different city) We were testing on one
machine only. No-one else was on pdox at the time.

hence the switch.

-- All XP, I think. There was one running 98, but they changed it
recently (I believe). Could this have triggered something with the old
server? Again, though, we were testing on one active machine only.

-- Thanks again. I look forward to hearing from you if you have other
questions / suggestions.

Just having windows 98 and windows xp on the same network is known to cause
problems.

As to 8 characters for file name, what is the setting in the bde on that
system, for 'save in ... format'; one option being "windows 3.1" ?

So, at this point the corruption isn't an issue, just the 8 character issue?

Where do I find the bde setting for save in... format?

Correct: I'm not concerned about the corruption for the purpose of
this discussion - just trying to solve the 8 char. problem.

Hi Barb,
have you already tried to migrate your private directory to somewhere
else shorter than current location (i.e. C:\PdxPriv) ?

Hi Anacleto,

Yes. the private directory on each machine points to c:/temp.

Hi Anacleto,

Yes. the private directory on each machine points to c:/temp.

Hmmmmm. That may work, but have you also tried c:\temp? Or, maybe test to
see, programmatically, where Paradox thinks riv: is pointing to?
