Hi Barb,
have you already tried to migrate your private directory to somewhere
else shorter than current location (i.e. C:\PdxPriv) ?

Hi Anacleto,

Yes. the private directory on each machine points to c:/temp.

Hmmmmm. *That may work, but have you also tried c:\temp? *Or, maybe test to
see, programmatically, where Paradox thinks riv: is pointing to?

Sorry, typo. It is c:\temp. Remember the system has been working for
years (about 9) and this is simply a Working Directory change.

What do ***they*** have checked on the erroneous machine?

Hi Barbara

Looking through my files, I found this
http://hem.bredband.net/bertilisberg...yond/bid31.htm

It's on how long filenames, other than 8.3, are encoded by different
versions of Windows. I'm not usre it's relevant to your problem.

Within Pdox we cannot open any file with a name that is more than 8
characters long.

Which is the exact error you'll get when opening a file? And could you show
the exact name of such a file?

There have been reports on problems if the pathname has contained other
characters than letters and digits.

And BTW, exactly which version of the BDE, eg IDAPI32.DLL, are you using? I
hope it's a version later than the one that shipped with Paradox 8.

Writing this, I now recall problems using Paradox 7 caused by files on a
network drive having been restored from a backup. The backup software didn't
restore the shortname of long filenames in the same way as they had been
created initially.

(about 2 months ago) the system was running fine - with the usual
corrupt tables every now and then, but basically okay. In the last
couple of months there have been all sorts of problems, which seem to
be server related. So.. they decided to move the system onto a brand
new server.

We have everything pointing where it should. Within Pdox we cannot
open any file with a name that is more than 8 characters long. The
path is a one letter drive name which maps directly to the server
(which is named "Mail-1"). So our longest file names + path have no
more than 20 characters.

We compared the new and old server settings and permissions and they
are identical.

What am I missing?

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Barb

Hi Bertil,

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately I STILL can't get into my
client's computers. I can answer some of your questions now, and will
answer the others when I get access to the computer where we switched
working directories.

The exact error message (from memory - so it may not really be exact)
was "Invalid file name". The table that was being opened was
schedfreeze.db. (Actually :ATKT:schedfreeze,db where :ATKT: is an
alias for M:\Maestro, and M: is the "mail-2" server.)

I passed on the information about the file names to their server tech
guy, but I'll keep looking too.

Barb

Just found out that I was wrong about the server operating systems.
This is what the tech guy told me:

"Both servers are running Windows Server 2003 SP-2 The new server is
Running X64 and the old one which is currently hosting Maestro is a 32
Bit system, the new system is 64 bit and this is the only difference
on the OS. They are not running server 2000."

Hi Barb,

Perhaps you have installed an older version of the BDE. Earlier versions of
the BDE (version 3 I think) do not work with FAT32 and had other issues that
have since been resolved. Can you confirm the version of idapi.dll that is
being used, and also check there is only one on the machine.

Leslie.
