Default Installation Issue - 11-30-2006 , 10:52 AM

I need to install an old version of Paradox that I own both the program and
runtime version of on a new computer. Unfortunately, they are on old floppy
disks and the new computer doesn't have an A drive.

I copied the installed Programs to the new computer but, of course, since
they are not registered, they tell me they can't find ODAPI or BWCC.DLL. I
put in the environmental variables for path but that doesn't help.

I can transfer the floppies to any medium but I think the install program
will look for drive A.

Any ideas?

Thank You

I think if you copy the entirety of all floppies to a subdirectory, and copy
each floppy into that subdirectory, you will be able to install.

I've done this with at least one version in the past. But it was a LONG
time ago and don't remember the specifics.

What version are you trying to install?

Otherwise, you might consider adding a floppy drive to a system just for
this installation.

Ron - I think I had this problem with Paradox 7 that I have on floppies. I
copied all of the files to a USB drive. I think they all needed to be
installed in the root directory as the install will take a drive letter but
doesn't seem to like paths.

Give it a try or try Tony's ideas. Let us know which one works.

Yup, I used to install that way with version 5.

The quickest way might be to by a USB floppy drive. Here in Sweden they cost
around 50 USD.

You might also be able to use another PC on the network that has floppy
drive and make that available with a share.

If the install really needs "A:" you should be able to map "A:" to that
share (or to any share).

Thank you for your reply.

I am trying to install version 4.5.

I am a bit unclear as to whether you mean to copy the files from each floppy
to a subdirectory and then copy each disk as a subdirectory of that folder
or just copy all the files and run the install. If Paradox finds all the
files it needs in one folder, then it won't call for additional disks?

Also, what about the BWCC.DLL that Paradox wants to overwrite? I assume the
version in WindowsXP is much newer than in the ancient 4.5 version of
Paradox.

Thanks again.

Ron,
I have sometimes used an old dos command called substitute (subst) which
still works with XP. I use this sometimes in situations where Paradox is
started away from the network, but still needs a drive letter that looks
like it is still on the network, but in fact resides on the local C:\. This
works for network control files(.net) as well as for Paradox Aliases etc.

I run a batch file with the following syntax:
subst A: /D
subst A: C:\60gig

In the above, the first line simply removes the substituted A:\ drive
The second line maps (or substitutes) drive letter A:\ for whatever is in
the 60gig folder on C:\ drive.

Give it a try if you like....
Peter
