Default GPVs - ALL DAY, EVERY DAY- why? - 06-11-2007 , 09:09 AM

Good Morning,

My Paradox ‘ALL DAY’ Users are getting GPVs all day - everyday.
They tell me they are not doing anything in particular when the GPVs occur.
We have had Paradox 9 for several years without GPVs.
The Paradox App is loaded on Windows XP SP2 PCs.
The database sits on a Window 2003 R2 SHARE Machine.

Can someone tell me why this is occurring and how can I stop the GPVs?

TIA

Jeanette

Om my site, there a document Errors explained. There are two entries in the
index for Unexpected general protection violation. Read them, on you'll
notice you have to provide a lot more information to get any help with this.

Thanks Bertil,

First the GPV message is:
Press 'OK', then save your documents and exit Paradox. If the problem persists:
press 'Abort' to terminate Paradox.

I looked at your Errors Explained for Unexpexted GPVs and I could not ID
anything that my Users are telling me.

The Users that have access to my Pdox 9 database are stored in a Group. Users
are added and deleted when necessary. This is controlled by the Admin staff.

I tried to put my database back in the same condition as when there were
no GPVs.

I have removed all of the programs that were created when I began to get
GPVs BUT the Users are still getting GPVs everyday.

I changed a message in a form that is several years old. Here's the new
message.
msgStop("MISSING DATA...","TELL DESIGN ENGINEER -
There are some records with no Quantity AND/OR
Neighborhood and/or Item Number and/or Fund Type is BLANK.
FOR EACH RECORD, A VALUE MUST BE ENTERED FOR ALL FIELDS
or
DELETE the RECORD !")

I did create a new table recently and I can't remember if I created it as
Paradox 5 Windows or 7,8,9 version. I don't think mixing tables created
with different versions would cause GPVs but I thought I'd mention it. Is
there a way for me to see what version my tables are?

I am suspect of the Hot Fixes that occur using the WSUS server but I have
been assured that the Fixes are scrutinized to pass an OK UPDATE test before
the update takes place.

My Users are soooooo frustrated and I am as well because I can't help them.

If you can solve this problem I will be a VERY HAPPY WOMAN !!!!

THX

Open the Table Structure dialog, and you 'll see the table version in the
dialog's title.

Mixing different table version's does not cause GPVs.

Still you haven't told us anything about when the GPVs occur!

Running a form and pressing a button with code? What does the code do?
Editing data, triggering action event where code is executing?

There's no way to help you, unless you can isolate the code that is
executing when the GPV occurs!

Were you the person who sets Local Share = False?
(If so, is that the case with these users?)

If the GPVs are happening when the user mouses over the bottom of the
status bar (when going to the Start bar, for example), I've had some
luck preventing them by programmatically expanding the status bar to two
lines, then dropping it back to one line when each application is
started. It happens to fast for the user to notice and seems to
dramatically reduce the GPVs.

Paradox seems to be a bit aggressive in detecting GPVs. I always tell my
users that if they get two within a fairly short time period, they might
as well give up and reboot since it generally doesn't get any better...

One more thing: if they've been running for several years w/o GPVs and
suddenly started getting them, the problem may not be Paradox - perhaps
they've loaded another app or utility or upgrade that is causing
Paradox's over-aggressive GPV detection to trip. Can the timing of the
sudden onslaught of GPVs be linked to another PC, network, or software
event?

Jeanette,

Here's my WAG's:

1. Are any of your users' printer names longer than 30 or so characters?
If so, shorten them. This will show up when you're trying to print.

2. Do your users use the Project Viewer? If so, do any files in your :Work:
or :Priv: folders have an '*.xml' extension? Try to move these files out
of the Pdox folders.

Other than that, we're just guessing. It would help if you could tell us
what it happening when the GPVs happen.

Bear in mind, I've been chasing down an intermittent GPV for 2 years now,
and it's driving me nuts!

HTH,
Jim Moseley

That message is certainly the one I get with the mouse over the start
button. I think it was Paul Cronk came up with the status line fix I've
been using, it doesn't just reduce the GPVs, it stops them completely.

Don't leave us hanging... What is the status line fix you've been using?

On my own machine, I took care of this problem by moving my task bar
(I think that's what it is called; the one with the Start button) to
the top and running Paradox maximized. That way I can't move the
cursor across the bottom boundary of the Paradox window. For clients'
machines, though, you can't enforce this, so Jeff's solution is
needed.
