Default can not open the file - 01-29-2007 , 05:14 AM

Since I used version 9 and now version 11, I get many problems for opening
report or request, the message is "can not open the file" the complementary
information
is "manque separateur de colonne dans l'en tête " that is to say "in the
header of the file, row separation is missing"
This problem occurs when I transfert the directory from my
desktop to laptop, whatever the mean used : disket, network, cd, or USB
memory.
If I take all the directory and work with Paradox 7, the report can be open.
I buy version 11 hoping this bug disappears but the bug is still alive !!
Does somebody have encountred the same problem ? What can be done ?

Jean-Pierre

Look at
http://hem.bredband.net/bertilisberg...cs4/eid427.htm. There
are two links in that document, the first one is hsown below. The second
one, you have to get yourself.

SUMMARY:
Sorting a report, you can get an error [ Could not initialize report.
Expecting column separator in table header. ]

In P10, this is mentioned in the Release Notes.

COMMENTS:
From Paradox 9 Bde limits - BDE Limitation - Reports:
The length of the string identifying the full path to the report's
source table, plus the table's file name, plus the length of the name of
the first sort field cannot be more that 66 characters.

This includes the drive letter and colon and the ".db" database extension.

My comments:
The exact limit can be somewhat lower, like 64.

Another possible, not verified, cause reported by:
GeneM
C McBride
Date: 7 September 2003

Pdx10 doesn't seem to like having tables with names like :PRIV:_names in
the data model...

Thanks for your answer, however I beleive my filenames never over pass the
mentionned limit, as have be working with Dos, my filenames never exceed
more than 10 or twelve caracters.
Just a question is the limitation valuable for the filename only or or the
filename with whole path ?

Jean Pierre,
As Bertil told you, shorten the path or change the directory of your data,
may do the tricks.
But if you use a french version of the BDE, (5.1.1.1 or 5.2.0.2) there is a
specific problem with idr2000C.dll
See my documents from Paradox Convention - Paris 2003
I can send you directly the explanations about yhis

The whole path. (including the the first field name of ypur sort order)
That means a report may works without problems for years and the problem may
occur suddenly if someone make some sort orders change
Voir ceci, (attention chemin different dans votre cas)
C:\Program Files\Corel\WordPerfect Office 2002\ReleaseNotes.htm
La chaîne identifiant le chemin d'accès à la table source du rapport, le nom
de fichier de la table et le nom du premier champ de tri ne peut pas excéder
66 caractères. Borland Database Engine est à l'origine de ce problème.

As has been stated, the most likely cause is the length of the full path (not
alias, but path) to the first table in the report + the names of any sort
fields (if any).

Put your Paradox files in a directory closer to the root.

If that doesn't solve the problem, do you happen to have, in the report,
a tableframe with more than one object in a single column (e.g. two fields
in one column)? If so, group them. (I can't remember if the error message
is the same or not for these two issues, but if not, they're similar.)

FWIW,

Liz
