glad it's running, but that really makes you the first person who ever
needed a Compatibility Mode setting to make P9 run on XP.. evidently, that
action masked something else that was wrong.. in this case, two wrongs DID
make a right..

I've recently started moving software from my Win2000 box to one running
XP Pro.

I've just installed Paradox 9, but every time I try and start it, I get
the splash screen very briefly and then this error message:

Could not initialize BDE.: Insufficient shared memory available.

I've been on the net but haven't found anything completely equivalent
except that this message can occur if one tries to run two copies of
Paradox at once. I'm not.

I'd be grateful for advice as to how to get it going.

My BDE is version 5 with the files like Idapi32.dll, etc., dated
19/11/1999.

Hi Malcolm,

I have come across this error in two cases:

1. You are running the application in Compatibility Mode which can confuse
the BDE.

2. There is a memory conflict between the BDE and another resource on the
machine - usually the video card but not always. Remember the BDE expects
its contiguous shared memory to be available for all addresses in the
specified range.

The solution is to go into the BDE Administrator and under Configuration -
System - INIT update the Shared Memory Location and potentially the size.
For further information on these settings refer to the Help file. I
usually
leave the Shared Memory Location blank and set the size to 2048 - I have
not
had any problems on any Windows XP machine which is now over 500 thus far.

Hi Leslie.

You've solved the problem though perhaps not in the way expected from your
advice.

I checked BDE Admin and found that the Shared Memory Location settings
were, as you advised, blank and 2048.

I then had a look at the Compatibility Mode which was unticked. So, as an
experiment, I set it to Win2000 and, lo and behold, the program started
without any problem!

So, my grateful thanks!
