Default Newbie questions - 04-08-2008 , 04:08 AM

I am completely new to Oracle after 10 years of using MS SQl, and I am
struggling with the basics.

I need to collect data from an Oracle database, and I have had access to the
oracle database set up
I have the following information, with obvious bits changed.

XXXXXXM =
(DESCRIPTION =

(ADDRESS_LIST =

(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = xxxx.xx.xx.147)(PORT = 1521))

)

(CONNECT_DATA =

(SERVICE_NAME = xxxxR1)

(SRVR = DEDICATED)

)

)

I also have the user id and pw

I have installed oracle client 9i, but the SQL+ asks for a host string??

I have also tried to configure a connection using the "Network Configuration
Assistant" by adding a Oracle Names Servers. But having added this it
doesn't seem to work, and I cant edit or delete it.

Any help would be appreciated.

What operating system?
I am using windows xp

I have managed to use Netmanager in my client 9i installation, to create a
"Service naming" I have called "testme" to the database. This checks out ok
when I add the correct id and pw.

However when I try to TSNPING testme it errors "failed to recognise name".

I have also added SQLDeveloper, which is allowing the connection using the
TSN name, but when I connect it tells me that only 9x and above are
supported, and whilst it then builds the db structure, it does not hold any
tables views etc.
I am not sure at the moment what version the oracle db is I am connecting
too.

Still needing any advice please.
