Default newbie-how to secure communication with toad - 05-27-2004 , 08:39 AM

Hi,
I am wondering if there is a mechanism to secure communication between
TOAD and a Standard Oracle db (not Enterprise Edition). I am remotely
connecting to the db on an unsecured connection. Is a VPN the only
way to ensure security?

Thanks,
Rett

Please help us decide the proper way to respond:

What security concerns do you have?

How well do you understand Oracle Networking (aka SQL*Net and Net8)?

How familiar are you with the Oracle Networking documents for the version of
Oracle and the network protocol(s) you use?

Have you looked at Pete Finnigan's "Oracle security related" web site at
http://petefinnigan.com?

BTW - you have not mentioned the client or server OSs, the Oracle version,
or the network protocol. We'd have to make a few assumptions: Windows
2000 (Windows users almost never identify the OS, whereas others tend to do
so); Oracle9i (many organizations woke up to the value of Standard Edition
around the release of Oracle9i); TCP/IP.

Hi,
yep- it's a win2k box connecting to HP-UX Oracle. The excellent
petefinnigan.com answered all of my high level questions - thanks!
