Default Help with TOAD - 02-14-2004 , 03:27 PM

Hi,

I hope someone can offer help about TOAD here.

I have just installed the free version of TOAD, and am trying to connect to
an Oracle database.
I get the "Server Login" screen where I can enter a "database" and a
"user/schema" and a "password". I am sure I have entered these values
correctly.... but I get an error:
Initialization error: could not locate OCI dll.
What does this mean? And more importantly how do I fix it?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi,
thanks for the reply. I have seen that site, but I can't get it to relate to
the installation I have - makes me wonder if it is necessary to installl
more than just TOAD?

For instance, the link mentions some registry entries that may need
changing. I have nothing that resembles those entries.
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | ORACLE | ALL_HOMES" simply does not exist
in my registry after I have installed TOAD.

Likewise it mentions alterations to the windows path. It talks about an
"oracle home\bin" directory. I have nothing resembling an "oracle" directory
(like "orant" or any "bin" directory off anything that looks like it has
anything to do with oracle).

It really does seem that one cannot just install TOAD on a pc and connect to
an oracle database. What else needs to be installed?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter

You must install the Oracle client software.

You better be darn careful if *you* are going mess around in your database
with something like Toad.

Good for developer - IMHO - never to be used in production!

Nonsense. Sql*plus is just as dangerous in production as Toad,
especially if there is not RI in the database (which is the default
with US software)

What do you guys mean by "dangerous". Do you mean for example that you can
directly meddle with the data and maybe destroy its integrity?

I just want to have TOAD installed as I am involved in developing an
application which uses an Oracle database, and I find TOAD an incredibly
handy tool for use during the development of the application - to check the
data it reads and writes for example.

Always depends on who is behind the wheel.

Yes it's easy to mess around with TOAD, but a lot more efficient to work
with than using sql*plus or OEM with the DBA module. Have you ever worked
with Oracle procedure editor ? That's total bullshit compared to any decent
and modern PL/SQL editor.

We're in 2004 and they don't even have command line history in sql*plus for
windows for god's sake.

Also, there is a way to make TOAD less dangerous by removing buttons and
menu item for oneself or for others.
