XDB is in fact installed by default will 11g (EE, STD, XE) when DBCA
is used to create the database.

DBA I know seems to enchant some "CREATE DATABASE..." magic and then runs dictionary scipts

Oh, if you don't know it you probably won't need it anyway. It's some
newfangled crap that elderly people and experienced DBAs shouldn't even start
to worry about - it will most likely go away :-)

If I remember correctly, the first time I installed a version of Oracle that came with DBCA, it
wanted to install a database automatically.

But it failed.

That was the last time I used - albeit unawares - a database creation/configuration attrocity.

These days I use it to enable Apex, if asked, and configure OEM. It works
well. I also use it to add/manipulate ASM diskgroups. It's not that bad
any more.
