and 'transaction'), I guess he actually only has 1 table ('transactions'):

he has 2 tables.

'transaction'.

You are correct, i've overlooked it in OP plan - there is only one table
in place. However, all the NULL/NOT NULL logic discussed above still
applies in that case, i think.

Except that the OP is on version 9, so 11g features do not apply.
