Default split mirror backups - 12-01-2011 , 12:29 PM

In http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/...p.htm#i1006658
it sez:

"You do not need to use SUSPEND/RESUME to make split mirror backups,
unless your system requires the database cache to be free of dirty
buffers before a volume can be split. Some RAID devices benefit from
suspending writes while the split operation is occurring; your RAID
vendor can advise you on whether your system would benefit from this
feature."

Is that "database cache" some reference to needing to checkpoint or
something, or is it a typo and should have been something about the
raid cache?

I haven't worked on splits in this century yet, and may have to work
on some newfangled thing soon, so I'm wondering what people really
have to do. Naturally I'm going to be skeptical about what the vendor
advises.

I have worked with BCV splits earlier in this century (EMC Symmetrix, at
OXHP) and, as far as I can remember, we didn't do SUSPEND/RESUME, we
turned all tablespaces into BEGIN BACKUP mode just before split, then did
the split, and then issued the END BACKUP command.

Yeah we ditched Symmetrix ( for Clariion ) 5 years back.

Like Mladen said ... that's how we proceeded also.

I have complete doc on our setup and scripts used back then
( somewhere ) so let me know if that might be useful to you. It was
hpux 9.2 Oracle ( then 10.2 eventually ) RAC on emc.

What environment exactly are you going to be doing this in?

That's my understanding as well with the Symmetrix series although I
don't do SAN-based backups anymore.
With the Clarions, I don't think BCVs are available and hence you
can't really do beginbackup/endbackup.
In our case (long gone now) we simply did a synchronous replication
mirror to another SAN and split it as a group. The only problem there
is that all luns involved with the database have to belong to a single
replication group and on Clarions the maximum number of luns in a
synchrep group is 16. That means you have to use larger, lesser luns
for a database group - rather than smaller and many.
