Default RMAN for Backing up Non Database Filesystems? - 10-02-2011 , 03:05 PM

Hi,

We are running RMAN on 10g and 11g databases (On Solaris)

Is there a way to configure RMAN to backup non-database filesystems?
(Likely, a full backup weekly, and cumulative incremental daily).

Thanks,
BG

No. From the Concepts Manual:

"Recovery Manager (RMAN)

A utility that backs up, restores, and recovers Oracle databases. You
can use it with or without the central information repository called a
recovery catalog. If you do not use a recovery catalog, RMAN uses the
database's control file to store information necessary for backup and
recovery operations. You can use RMAN in conjunction with a media
manager to back up files to tertiary storage."

RMAN was not designed to backup anything other than Oracle databases
(where Oracle database includes archivelogs, controlfiles, spfiles and
ASM files).

I second what David said. The rman utility is Oracle specific.

Why would you want to do something like that? Is RMAN going to the tape
or disk? Is there any other backup tool you are using? Anything like
NetBackup, EMC Networker or Tivoli? Oracle has a backup solution which is
not free, but essentially competes with the ones listed above.
Oracle*Backup is not a very popular solution to my knowledge, Oracle has
badly lost the race with Symantec, EMC and IBM, primarily because of the
pricing issues.

Hi,

Thanks for those who replied.

The idea of using RMAN for non-database filesystems was a long-shot
given, like
people said, that its purpose is to backup, recover and restore the
database.

RMAN goes to tape.

Thanks,
BG
