It is my understanding that yes, you can use 11g grid+ASM with a 10g RAC
database.

Excellent. That is my question. I tried unsuccessfully. I was able to get
a single instance 10g to work, but it wouldn't start as a cluster
instance. Did you do it and, if yes, how exactly is that done? That is
what I am asking.

Hi Mladen,

I am almost positive I did this (10.2.0.4 database managed by 11.2.0.2
CRS) last September when I first tested 11.2.0.2. However, my notes
from that testing aren't very good. However, I will be doing this
again later this week, so this is a timely question.

I will forward anything I do to you.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks, Steve. I will also be doing that this week. My CIO was nice
enough to make necessary equipment available.

I have to think that not a lot of people are trying to go from a 9i
single instance database directly into an 11.2 RAC setup. Many people
would do the RAC setup and migrate data into it via one of several
means.
John, with all due respect, I believe that this discussion is missing the
point. there is no 9i in the story. For 9i upgrade project, my questions
are answered to my satisfaction. I am asking for the experience with 10g,
as there is another project looming.

Now that we have established what has transpired thus far, let's get
into the actual problem.

1) you have a 10g single instance database on 11gR2 ASM which is a
part of multinode cluster.
2) you have both 10g and 11g RAC binaries on all nodes in the cluster
3) database is still 10g single instance.

Questions.
What steps were taken to attempt to convert the 10g Single Instance to
10gRAC?
At what point did this fail?
What errors were incurred that said it was "not working".

Rather than continue to fight with 10g, I would suggest:

1) upgrade the single instance to 11g
2) convert the 11g single instance to RAC using rconfig.

- Control file was re-created with MAXINSTANCES=32
- Another public logfile thread was added and enabled.
- Additional UNDO tablespace was created
- Parameter files for both instances were prepared, by setting the
instance number, cluster_database and undo tablespace.
- Tried startup mount and the instance told me that it cannot communicate
with CRS services.

What shared file system are you using? ASM? See 1073926.1

From the above note 1073926.1, it is also required to apply the patch
8288940 to fix 11g ASM Incompatibility for 10g.
