Default Oracle 10 on Solaris 10 - ORA-06553 error - 05-13-2011 , 02:27 PM

I have installed Oracle 10 on Solaris 10 (x86).
I try to access it - "sqlplus system/manager" and get the following
error:

ERROR:
ORA-06553: PLS-213: package STANDARD not accessible

ERROR:
ORA-06553: PLS-213: package STANDARD not accessible

Error accessing package DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO

Any ideas?

I'm just trying to play with Oracle, and I haven't got to 1st base
yet. I hope to one day create a table and maybe even insert some
data :-)

Neil:

# I have installed Oracle 10 on Solaris 10 (x86).

I try to access it - "sqlplus system/manager" and get the following
error:

.... Oracle's support of Solaris x86 has been "interesting" over the
last 10 years.

First they support it ... then don't ... then say they support it ...
but maintenance and patchsets are really really slow coming out.

Do you mean x86 32 bit or x86 64 bit?

Have you patched it up to the latest available patchset ( or patchset
update )? Getting Oracle maintenance beyond the base release requires
a support contract of course.

# I'm just trying to play with Oracle, and I haven't got to 1st base

data :-)

Well the linux side ( come to the dark side ) is always an option.
Solaris "should be" a whole lot better soon now that Oracle has
purchased Sun ...

64 bit is the way to go regardless of linux/solaris religious wars ...
you just need some relatively recent hardware to support it.

Thanks very much for all your comments, I will follow up on them and
post if/when something sorts this out.
This is on Solaris 10 x86 32 bit - a VMWare session on my PC.

Seems amazing there's so much messing about just to get the database
started up!
I haven't done any patching.
Why people rave about Oracle is beyond me.

Yes, running the 2 SQL scripts mentioned fixed this issue.
Thanks again.

Neil:

# Yes, running the 2 SQL scripts mentioned fixed this issue.

Normally when creating a database you either

a) have a lot of experience and knowledge and if you are doing it
manually know ALL the steps that have to be done and in the correct
order

b) use the GUI ( dbca ) which will do all the steps for you

The maintenance question is because the base releases ( "free" )
software that oracle let's you download are missing a whole bunch of
fixes. The base releases may or may not be very stable in other
words ... and putting on maintenance gets one typically to a more
stable and workable system.

Well Jessie J had a pretty good live performance last weekend on
Saturday Night Live ... and her song "Price Tag" just might be
relevant to the whole Oracle licensing rave.

I think I like her new release somewhat better than the alternate
latest one from Brittany Spears ... but both of them together might be
more than most Oracle DBAs can take.

Not a big fan of Gaga, but definitely appreciated her bringing down
Amazon servers. That's cloudt!
