Actually Mladen you missed the point (not that I explicitly stated what
that point was - left for the reader to guess!) - the "web pl/sql
toolkit" is a set of PL/SQL packages which are then utilised by an
apache (Oracle HTTP Server) plug-in (mod_plsql)

Ah, you have Apex applications? Now, that will need rewriting.
Fortunately, something like Django, Cake of Symfony can be a rather good
replacement. I admit, Apex is a great idea for a vendor lock. People are
using it to develop simple reports and forms in a really fast manner, but
they are completely and utterly non-portable. And being faithful to
Oracle is getting really expensive these days.
No we don't have APEX applications; we just use the web pl/sql toolkit
to develop our applications - upside is we have optimised, powerful
applications. Downside is cannot sell to the SQL Server market.

Is there an equivalent to the "web pl/sql toolkit" on DB2?
That's the HTP package and modplsql?
We do have an alpha

DB2 is a viable alternative for our main database. That discussion is
still ongoing. I even suggested replacing Linux cluster with a single AIX
mini which I believe could outperform 3 or 4 machines with quad-core AMD
processors and 32GB RAM each, but I am not the person who signs the check.
AIX is much more mature system, with extent based file system,
defragmenters, good monitoring tools and alike. The last version that I
worked with was AIX 5.4. I imagine that there was a new version or two
since then.

Serge, DB2 does have LOB compression, as visible from this, now rather
old article by Jens Seifert:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/da...m-0806seifert/
index.html

Is that a separately purchased option or is that a part of the basic DB2?
How about partitioning?

To use row compression, you must have a license for the DB2 Storage
Optimization Feature.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce.../c0056481.html

But it appears to be included in the advanced enterprise edition

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...%69 %74%22%20

So I guess it depends on the definition of basic :-) Not sure why it is
included in the personal edition, but I guess it is for testing purposes.

I think partitioning is part of the base DB2.
AESE (all in) is the most popular option these days anyway because the
uplift compared to the added value makes it a no brainer.
Most importantly all the tooling is included.

Never forget that I'm a techie though. All I know about licenses is that
they pay my mortgage.

Cheers

You and me both. I hate it when my boss tasks me with things like cutting
down on oracle licenses consumption.

See, I my contrast like that very much.
If you're going to Open World there is a free DB2 Workshop in San Fran
just prior to it; link of my blog.

Sorry just mostly lost interest in DB2 after moving over to Oracle for
the day time gig.

Are you going to be in San Fran just prior to/during OOW 2011?

I would meet up for a beer ... I happen to be presenting Sunday
afternoon at OOW 2011 ( I was not going to go this year then my
presentation was accepted ).
