Default The end of OCFS - 10-17-2011 , 09:49 PM

This went through without a fuss: OCFS2 will be supported only on OEL
kernels:

http://lists.elrepo.org/pipermail/el...il/000597.html

I wanted to install OCFS2 and a single node cluster on my Fedora 14 box,
but there were problems. I couldn't bring OCFS2 up. The problem was in
the kernel modules which didn't want to listen to the given port. I did
that several times on CentOS 5, always without a problem so I knew that
the problem was in the kernel. I started digging around and found the
link above.
Oh well, it seems that my 1-node cluster will have to use GFS. Shucks.

Bad news: RAC refuses to install OCR and voting files to GFS2. "Not a
suitable location". As for OCFS2, it fails on F14:

[root@medo ocfs2]# service o2cb online
Loading stack plugin "o2cb": OK
Loading filesystem "ocfs2_dlmfs": OK
Mounting ocfs2_dlmfs filesystem at /dlm: OK
Setting cluster stack "o2cb": OK
Starting O2CB cluster ocfs2: Failed
Cluster ocfs2 created
o2cb_ctl: Internal logic failure while adding node medo
Stopping O2CB cluster ocfs2: OK
[root@medo ocfs2]# ocfs2console
python: /builddir/build/BUILD/Python-2.7/Objects/dictobject.c:759:
PyDict_SetItem: Assertion `value' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)
[root@medo ocfs2]#

Mladen:

You mean Oracle Linux ( OL ) kernels right?

The word was out in force at OOW 2011 to avoid saying/using OEL ...
it's a word game eh?

Wonder if they will change OL to just L sooner or later or just O?

Oh well! It's not just that, the fact that Grid installation refused to
use fully functional GFS2 file system irks me beyond belief. Oracle is
getting more and more proprietary. First, they refused to support OpenLDAP,
then they de-facto killed OCFS, then they de-supported GFS. I hate virtual
machines and installing software on them but I will apparently have try
that. Virtual machines are the biggest performance killers ever invented.

While this may be true for x86 virtual machines like VMware, Xen and Oracle
VM Server, it certainly is not for 'old school' hypervisors used today in
every single IBM mainframe and the majority of their Power systems.
They are all descendants from (and still compatible with!) the famous
CP/CMS system initially built some 45 years ago by IBM's Cambridge
Scientific Centre in cooperation with MIT's Lincoln Laboratory research
centre and distributed as "open source" (in the 60's!).

Cheers!
