Sorry I forgot to mention. The platform is solaris.
Oracle Support came back with the suggestion to check oradism
See notes :1205673.1 and 1018855.1
The permissions of oradism were indeed wrong.
We had it corrected and will see whether it helps.

No wonder I got it wrong. I have to deal ith RH 5.6 64 bit which only
supports standard SVR4 shared memory.
