Default Oracle9i and 8GB RAM on Win2k Adv. Srv. - 01-08-2003 , 01:56 PM

We currently running 8.1.6.3 patch 8 on Win2K Adv. Srv. SP2.
Hardware is compaq quad 900 MHz and 8GB RAM
We are able to use more than 4 GB RAM with the switches in
Boot.ini(/3GB /PAE) and AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY registry parameter.
Currently, we are in a process of testing migration to 9.2.0.2.1.
Oracle is not able to recognize more than 4GB of RAM with same tweaks
to boot.ini and AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY registry parameter.

Any suggestions...

AFAIK

- W$dows isnt able to give more than 3 Gig Proces space, Not Oracle.
- W$dows Datacenter is able (may be wrong here)

Hi Neil,

Yes, Oracle can use more than 3G on Win 2000 Adv with 8i.

But you must remove the /3GB switch and leave in only the /PAE.

Then you can go up the 8G (total)

Unfortunately, with 9.2, it doesn't appear to work

Good Luck

Richard

To s.kapitsa:
Datacenter is not needed to see 8GB, AdvSrv is enough
Dan

To Neil:

Oracle9i Release Notes Addendum
Release 2 (9.2.0.1.0) for Windows
Part Number A97617-01

3. Very Large Memory (VLM) and DB_BLOCK_SIZE
With a large DB_BLOCK_SIZE initialization parameter value, the default
AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY registry value of 1 GB may not be sufficient to
start the database. Out of memory errors display on configurations
where the number of least recently used (LRU) latches is high. As a
general guideline, increase the AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY registry value by 20
percent.

For example, if DB_BLOCK_SIZE is set to 8 K, AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set
to 1 GB, and the number of LRU latches is set to 32 (16 processor
computer), database startup fails with out of memory errors 27102 and
34. Increasing the AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY value to 1.2 GB fixes the
out-of-memory errors.
