Default I can't find the installer !! - 12-13-2004 , 03:03 AM

I've downloaded the 8.1.7 client (about 220MB) but it doesn't come with the
Oracle Installer. I can' find it anywhere on the Oracle download pages and
neither can my colleagues ! Please will someone supply me with either a URL
or advice on what I need to do to get the client installed onto a Windows
2000 Pro machine ?

Thanks

AFAIK it ONLY comes with the Oracle installer. Why do you think otherwise?

I've also got what seems to be a full client disc. If I put the disc in the
drive, up comes the 'splash screen'. However, when I click on the 'install
products' icon, it closes down and that's it. The icon may well be called
something else but it is 0225 hrs here so I don't have the PC on ! I'm sure
that you know what I mean though. I don't see anything else appear.

Thanks

Ah - so you *do* have an installer....
It even shows the splash screen.

Two questions, one answer:
1) Why do you want such old, depreciated software?
2) Did you ever check client 8.1.7 against the hardware
you have? The answer is: check internet for Pentium 4
bug.

Let me guess ... and your machine is a Pentium 4.

If so (A) read all the copious write-ups on the Pentium 4 bug or (B)
get a currently supported version of the product: 9i or 10g.

Hi Folks,

great answers!! .. but why not to give him a real advise?

Kev,
In case it is really the pentium 4 bug (it's java related) you should
copy the whole cd to a folder on your disk, search for a file called
symcjit.dll and just delete it. You can check the SUN pages to learn
more about this issue ...

Greetings,
Michael :-)

Because that's just one possible answer, and it may
not be feasible in his case. Also, by now, this is
a FAQ, and the OP should learn something from the
experience.
Holding hands is not the standard here.

Michael, it is indeed the P4 bug and deleting the file allowed the whole
thing to work. Thanks ! However, if I try to add the Oracle data source, I
get the 126 error that seems to be fairly common. I'm now trying to work
through that one.

Thanks

thanks Frank for making this clear for me ... I will remember this next
time when you should have a question. Im my eyes it is not a very good
style when you know the answer of a problem another one is fighting
with and you send him just the "half true".

But I'm able to learn and in case the community want it that way ....
Greetings,
Michael
