Default Health check for Oracle Database - 10-24-2007 , 10:56 PM

What do you recommend for regular database health check in Oracle? We want
to make it as standard procedure. Is it necessary? MSSQL has such
maintenance plan.

Oracle builds their "health check" functionality into Enterprise
Manager. With EM, it will check to ensure that the database is
available, tablespaces are not running out of space, performance metrics
are being met...and much, much more. SQL Server's maintenance plans, by
comparison, do very little.

Oracle also has a tool called RDA, which just gathers basic info for
support calls. It might be an idea to run it regularly so you are
prepared and documented, as long as you are putting SOP together. Use
metalink.oracle.com to access Note:330760.1 or Note:314422.1 . Note:
460796.1 shows how to run it in cron. You should always post your
version and platform.

Then get 11g. The built-in health management system contains both fully
automated and manual components. It makes the RDA tool all but obsolete
and has state-of-the-art capabilities.

Anyone interested in learning more about this can research:
Automatic Diagnostic Repository, DBMS_HM and DBMS_IR in Morgan's Library
at www.psoug.org. The docs at the usual place: http://tahiti.oracle.com.
