Default Basic install problem with Oracle 9i on windows XP - 10-26-2003 , 03:10 AM

I am trying to install oracle 91 for my SQL and a oracle class from
http://otn.oracle.com/software/produ...s/winsoft.html

After downloading disk1, 2 and 3, I try to install and nothing happens.
Any ideas? Am I missing something obvious?

Is there a space in the path to disk1/disk2 etc? If so make sure you install
from a path with no spaces (eg c:\downloads\oracle\disk1 ... )

You are missing the following:

1. What hardware, operating system, and how much RAM
2. What version and edition of 9i (and it is an "i" not a one (1). For
example 9.2.0.4 Enterprise Edition
3. What you did to try to start the installer.

For all we know you have an incompatible version of Linux with 64MB RAM.

My mistake using the Linux example. Rather it should have been the
question of XP Home
vs XP Professional. Oracle does not support installations on XP Home.

And while some have gotten it to work that is not guaranteed and should
not be done
unless you also are the type of person that thinks nothing of spitting
into the wind.

No space. I just click the setup and it does nothing.

OK. It is XP home. So its not officially supported. Got any pointers
of working around it :-).

If you want 'work arounds' visit some appropiate hackers group.
No one here will and can take responsibility for attempts to be
'smart' (read 'stupid')
Upgrade to XP Professional and don't post these requests here if you
*know* it isn't certified. This isn't a hackers group, you are wasting
bandwith.

128MB RAM, XP Home. It isn't going to happen.

Get yourself a real machine with a real operating system, and Win2K is
better than XP Pro.
You should be able to get something off eBay for $300-500 that will
actually run Oracle.
Anything less and you might as well get a stack of 3x5 cards.

Huh? I thought I'm the one to make wild sweeping statements around
here? Care to back that up Daniel? :-)

Seriously though, I'm still using both Win2000 Pro (office) and WinXP
Pro (home) and prefer the latter from a stability perspective. Both
has Oracle 9.2 Enterprise installed (including Delphi7 and an
assortment of SDKs and web servers).

What problems have you experienced with WinXP (besides the lane and
quirky new GUI)?
