Default Backup - 07-10-2003 , 03:07 AM

I have been asigned for a server maintenance, with Oracle 8 installed...

I know that for making backup I need to do a sort of bat file that stops
Oracle, copy relevant files to another location and restart Oracle...

What are the commands ?

TIA

With apologies ... I find your request offensive. If you aren't qualified
for the job you shouldn't be doing it.
Would you have accepted a job as a dentist with no knowledge of dentistry?
I, and others could give you
the commands ... heck we could give you the working file ... but what we
can't give you is the knowledge
required to get it all working properly and assure your employer that their
data is safe.

My suggestions would be as follows:
1. Hire a consultant to train you
2. Take a class and learn how to perform your job
3. Read books

Until then I can leave you with one, and only one, other bit of advice ....

Since this is a 'bat' file you are looking for, I'm assuming a Windoze
platform. In that case, the commands are:

1. net stop OracleServiceSID
2. copy c:\oracle\oradata\SID\*.* c:\oracle\oradata\SID\Backup\*.*
3. net start OracleServiceSID

I highly urge you to heed Daniel's advice and read the Oracle docs and
other materials as knowing only the above is only the tip of the ice
berg.

Brian

Maybe you do not fully understand..
If the data is needed ( even if only until the end of the year) then losing it can be a big problem..If you just back up the
file system with no knowledge of Oracle, you may not be able to use that backed up data if your oracle software should get
corrupted, or you have a disk failure, etc..

The use of EXP and IMP ( in addition to file system backup and knowing how to install and configure a new Oracle instance) is
a minimum need to be more sure of an ability to actually get any lost data back.
( The batch file commands you were shown will work if ALL your Oracle data files ( and what about the software files ?) are
in c:\oracle\oradata\SID\*.* - In most installations that will not be the case.).

Be afraid, be very afraid ( especially if your employer is going to hold you accountable for any data loss)

I understand you, but you don't know all the story...

The database is part of an ERP that is no longer used in production, and
will only be active until the end of this year...

Very few data is going to be inserted, but I need to do a backup... I'm not
going to change Oracle setup...

It would be a waste of time/money to apply your suggestions only for this
case.

There is no problem for using the backup, I did it last week, it was as
easy
as copying data directory backed up to fresh install, and it run like a
charm...
I assume you moved the application, checked that the data was all there and
that clients could connect? Cause an Oracle service can start quite happily
with no database there at all.

You see the problem is that you do rather give that impression.

I don't know how to do X.
I have an imperative to do X.
Just tell me what I have to mindlessly type.

Doesn't inspire confidence.

It extraordinarily redolent of certified 'professionals' though. As indeed
is the I'm not curious about anything, unless it has a career payoff bit at
the end.

I just live in real world where money is needeed...

I live in a parallel world where employers expect people to be able to
think
and understand what they are doing when it comes to preserving data.
