Default XMLA and Excel - 10-08-2003 , 03:00 PM

Hi,

I've set up the XMLA 1.1 beta on IIS and was wondering if there's any
way to now get the SOAP responses into Excel? The users here really
need a way to connect to Analysis Services through firewalls and this
seemed like a good way of doing it. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Martin

If your goal is to connect from Excel to Analysis Services through
firewalls - then you will be better off by using HTTP connectivity feature
of Analysis Services. It will work with Excel PivotTables as well as with
any Excel Add-In product.

Hi Martin, Digital Aspects (my employer) has a provider which works
with Excel pivot tables and Excel Add-ins but uses XMLA. It works
through firewalls and may be what you are looking for. It is also
efficient on bandwidth as it works with HTTP compression. A free
evaluation is available here

Thanks for your replies!

I'll try out both methods. I like the idea of conserving bandwidth as
some of our users will be using dial-up lines at times.

Hi Martin,

Check out my XMLA blog articles at
http://www.activeinterface.com/thinolap/thinolap.asp. I demonstrate how to
transform XML/A result sets into Excel sheets (and also into PowerPoint).
You could adopt my approach into an Excel VBA as well.

Where can I can information on the HTTP connectivity feature of Analysis Services?
