The only good web-based ad hoc report tool is a dead web-based ad hoc report tool ;-) Not correct. It always depends on the user requirements and if a company is looking for an ad-hoc reporting tool - not analysis - there are tools available that can meet a lot of requirements. A lot of requirements indeed, but usability is not one of them. |

Have you ever thought of maintaining a 1.000+ PC site where you have to install the software on any PC? If you don't have automated configuration management for a 1000+ PC site you are in need of different management, not another tool. |

I am not sure how much true exposure you have had to web based reporting tools in academia but many of the desktop clients out there offer to much complexity for business users and a simplified web front-end offers an interface that they all already partially familiar with. One of big benefits of web based reporting tools is that they tend to built upon an open API which allows business to configure or customize the front-end to fit a common enterprise look and feel. Have you ever had a chance to look at new Web based ad-hoc reporting tools like BO Web Intelligence, Cognos Query Studio, Brio and others? They are developed for the casual user and offer limited analytic functionality. Sometimes exactly the functionality end users need besides providing a good usability. Most of the tools use DHTML and offer a lot of the functionality that is provided by full-client tools. I don't want to start a discussion on security related issues though, since these issues can be managed. I will recommend all the clients I was offering consulting to, to start looking for a new management. Have you ever heard of organic growth of an organisation? Real life sites are not as easy to maintain as theory might make you believe. Kind regards, Joerg |
