Default Requirements gathering Business Objects - 08-05-2004 , 05:36 AM

Hi all,
I have been a user and ‘user requirements gatherer' for Cognos
(powerplay and Impromptu) for a good while now and was wondering how
this suite compares to Business Objects? Are they similar? Would I
have to rip up all my business requirements methods if we adopted a
new product?

Many thanks in advance for any advice?

Sam

You'll probably have to change.... and then probably change again
when the BO Client goes away next year when BO kills it in favor of
Crystal Reports.

Hi Sam,

not at all. BO is a BI reporting tool with some OLAP functionality.
Powerplay in my opinion is an OLAP browser with some reporting functionality
and Impromptu is a reporting tool (with some other functionality). Look for
the similarities. BO by the way won't cancel their main tool.

Kind regards,

Joerg

Sam: Why would your requirements change based on the software you use?
Shouldn't you develop your user requirements regardless of what tool they
use and then evaluate and use tools based on their ability to serve the
requirements?

BTW, You may want to look at Cognos ReportNet (which is fully integrated
with PowerPlay 7.3). ReportNet would likely cover more of the range of
requirements than some other tools, as it is quite broad in it's feature
set.

I would be concerned in making any large investment in Business objects
right now due to the fact that their product roadmap indicates significant
upheaval for all customers going forward.
