I would like to get a handle on the reality of what a real world,
large implementation of ROLAP is like. What are ups and downs. What
are the pros and cons vs. MOLAP.
If anyone has any specific experience on Teradata it would be of great
help.
Is MicroStrategy a good choice for Teradata?
thanks!

I've used MSTR and teradata many times, plus whole host of other olap
combinations. As for ROLAP vs MOLAP, it really depends on the
questions you are wanting ask. If have a large warehouse(tables around
100m rows and up) with a need to see atomic level data then ROLAP is
worth considering, if you have small amounts of data and a limited
number of questions MOLAP is probably a better choice (though there
are many other factors you should consider). Anyway teradata and mstr
together work pretty well, though you need to be carefull how you
implement your model and mstr schema or you'll find maintenance of
mstr somewhat complex as teradata models don't tend to follow a
star/snowflake approach.
One thing I would say, is if your company has made a large investment
in teradata and you opt for a rolap tool, you're going to leverage
that investment and allow for some some pretty complex and detailed
reporting, rather than pulling data into MOLAP cube and having to
re-invest in more technology to support the level of reporting
required, without leveraging your investment in teradata.
Another point, that is worth thinking about, is if you're warehouse is
in teradata and you use a rolap tool, you'll be able to run reports as
soon as you get the data into the warehouse, rather than having to do
another extraction into your molap cube.
But with molap you'll generally see faster reponse times, whilest with
mstr on teradata you'll see a varying range of response times
depending on the question.
Most of my clients that have rolap tools also have molap tools for
point solutions.
