I have almost three years experience implementing data warehouse technologies and reporting tools at large clients as a consultant. I know the ups and downs of most of the commercial packages through experience (Business Objects, Brio, Cognos, Microstrategy, etc.). My recent problem is that I am now an employee of a smaller firm that wants me to select a suitable reporting vendor for a next generation data warehouse...but they don't have the money to spend to get there. Here are the facts: - In the near term they will only have a couple of power users, but there is a potential audience of around 1000. - Web based deployment fits with our front-end strategy - The sponsors want robust reporting functionality like selection criteria, ad hoc reporting, and scheduled report distribution - They would like to move eventually to analytics and data mining, and would like to select a vendor with available add-ons, or at least compatibility with software that does Are there any inexpensive solutions out there that have comparable functionality to the big boys without a $200,000+ cost (i.e. user selection criteria, ad hoc reporting, scheduling, widespread distribution options like Excel format imports)? Or are there options available from the major players for a smaller scale deployment (like Microstrategy MDX for Excel only without having to purchase 7i suite)? Any suggestions are welcome.
