Dimensional is very business-driven...
How does your business logically want to view the data ? You will
take your views from the answers given. Handy trick from
object-oriented requirements gathering...Put all your data items on
3x5 cards and hand them to the business analysts or information
consumers, whomever is driving your requirements. Ask them as a group
to arrange them in piles the way they use or would like to use the
information...that's where you can start from and ask questions for
clarification to tell you how to dimensionally model the data.

Hi,

I am in the process of designing a Booking, Billing and Backlog
datamart. I have not decided on the backend yet but I have a choice of
Oracle (9) or SQL Server 2K. Data source is Baan ERP system. The
transaction level I have to populate the datamart is at sales order
line level.

My problem is that the data model I have come up with is more
relational than dimensional. Here is what I have got so far.

Orders
Order Detail
Customer
Products
Countries
Regions
Employees

Other way of sourcing the data would be to write one big query from
ERP and then do the dimensional model but that would slow down the
data retrieval. I would be grateful if any you can share your
experience with this sort of a datamart.

Thanks

Ather
