I am new at this. I am evaluating Cognos Decision Stream and Oracle
OWB (ETL tools). But we are also considering (not certain) Cognos
Report.Net down the track for reporting needs. For now, OWB serves our
DW needs. But I am wondering if DS may have advantages if we do get
Cognos Report.Net. Or would OWB/report Net work just as well. Would DS
offer any advantages ie would DS be avle to populate lots of
Report.Net metadata stuff that would put us ahead (if we had gotten
OWB instead). Would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

If you already have OWB, ReportNet (no "period" in the name) will work fine
with it. DecisionStream will have the added advantage of being able to give
you a headstart on the metadata models for ReportNet applications along with
the target data warehouse model, but the ReportNet metadata tool (Framework
Manager) can easily introspect the Oracle database tables and give you a
default model as well.

The data warehouses and/or marts you build using OWB are very suitable
for ReportNet - and all the other Query, Reporting and anlaysis tools
that run very well on Oracle - those provided by Oracle and those from
partners of Oracle like Cognos, Business Objects etc etc etc.

Since we are on an OLAP discussion group, it is worth also pointing out
that OWB not only makes it easy to build and manage the relational
structures you would expect in your data warehouse, but also
multidimensional OLAP cubes inside the Oracle Database should you choose
to activate that licence option. Cognos ReportNet is one of a number
of partner tools that explicitly support Oracle's multidimensional data
as well as the relational data. See here:

OWB does not directly generate ReportNet metadata for you (like it does
for the Oracle BI tools), but it is easy to plug in routines that you
provide into its process and data flows. Oracle Warehouse Builder can
utilize MIMB (from MITI - Meta Integration Technology Inc -
http://www.metaintegration.net) for metadata integration, an
organisation I believe Cognos are also involved with. See here:
