Default OLAP tool evaluation - 03-09-2005 , 09:54 AM

Hi everybody,

we are trying to evaluate the latest versions of several BI vendors:

1) Microstrategy 8
2) Cognos ReportNet
3) BusinessObjects XI
4) MS SQL Reporting Services

Somebody has brought up a security issue that no plug-ins on the client side
are permissible, i.e. no ActiveX controls nor Java applets (as I interpret
this constraint).
So, I think that only DHTML based OLAP / reporting software will do?

Who knows, which of the above tools do not depend on plug-ins?

Any help welcome!

Bye,

Michael

Business Objects, offers two interfaces for Web-based querying: a Java
applet and Dynamic HTML. The functionality in the applet version is
superior to that of the DHTML version last time I checked.

Cognos ReportNet touts a zero footprint that uses JavaScript and DHTML.

MicroStrategy has also taken a combination HTML/DHTML approach. I've
used this interface several times and found it to work in organizations
that limit the capabilities of web browsers.

I would also recommend that you look at Oracle's 10g OLAP and
Discoverer. Discoverer provides a pure DHTML and Java applet based UIs.
The Java applet based UI is called Discoverer Plus and it has more
functionality and is targetted at heavy users. Casual users would use
the Discoverer Viewer which is DHTML based.

OLAP functionality is integrated in the Oracle 9i and 10g databases
b.t.w.
