Default The OLAP Market - Metropolitan Police Informed - 09-19-2003 , 04:50 PM

Since my posting yesterday evening we have received over 600 target emails,
most of them containing viruses. Our virus software deals with this.

We have informed the British Metropolitan Police and have given the possible
reasons as to why.

We are not sure who, what company, nor the exact contribution that has
triggered this. All that is certain is that this started yesterday evening
and we will be looking at our logs of IP addresses over the last week. We
will also be looking at the message headers. We are also not sure but other
users from various discussion groups may be experiencing the same issue.

We are keeping an open mind on this issue and have broadened the
possibilities. This may not even be as a result of contributing to
discussion groups. We do however intend to find out.

Howie,

Is is really necessary for you to play out this melodrama in a public
forum?

Mark

Thank you for the reply.

We had already experienced and contained the issues as detailed in the URL.
However, viruses and other emails outside the scope in the link detailed are
being received. Over 1600 in less than 48
hours have never been received and it is as if someone has redirected
their trapped emails and viruses to our domain. We referred the matter as we
do not know
the source.

There will be no further updates to this thread. If someone is experiencing
the same issue can they email me

Howard.Taylor@ domain below.

Howard,

There is an email virus which is being mass mailed at this time , i have
recieved over 300 instances of it , trapped by the mail server.

See this link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3123726.stm

Generally when you post your email address to a newsgroup you are leaving
yourself wide open to spammers and email harvesters.

I can assure you there is no concerted campaign by anyone on this group to
send you any form of email, so i don't think there is any real need to
keep
posting updates to this thread.

Thanks

Mark

You're not alone...I got blasted in the same way - over 200 emails an hour.
I finally changed my email address. Clearly, posting in some newsgroups
leaves you open for this type of stuff. As I do, slip words that humans can
read in your email adresses so that, if they want to mail you they can, but
an automated script that simply lifts emails form the newsgoup with send a
message to a non existant box...

Thank you for the reply.

This is the first time something with this volume has occurred even though I
have included my email on numerous occasions. We have placed an image under
"News" on our web site www.o2olap.com/news.htm.

If anyone needs to know a way to contain this quickly, without having to
change emails, they can email me direct.

Thanks again for confirming that I am not alone and that this was not
specifically targeted at us.

Howard

I know this is kinda unfortunate that things must come to this point but
check out the link below. You can create a 'disposible' email address that
will forward emails to your real email address for a certain period of time
(you specify how long). This way you can create an email address for use in
forums and it will simply expire and no longer be valid after a while.
Kinda cool....

P.S.
thanks Mike

I agree, and thanks for the help. Two others have contacted me with the same
issue.

Thanks again
Howard
