Default OLAP Client - 10-29-2003 , 02:47 AM

Hi,

after many months of searching for an OLAP Client that

1. we can embed into a .net application (either an ocx or a .net
control)

2. is compatible with MSAS

3. exposes an api which allows full manipulation from code

4. Has dimension, level and cell formatting capabilities

5. is user friendly

6. is fast

we have not found one that satisfies all of these requirements. XL
addins

are out, the current big names, proclarity, cognos, panorama all failed
on

one or more of the above, notably on points 1,4 and 6. Maybe there is a
reason why we cannot seem to find a Fast AND 'formattable' client. We
can find one or the other, but never both.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Have you seen Enterprise Blocks? Its a set of integrated .NET web
controls and web service APIs for Microsoft Analysis Services and other
databases. By default, client calls to the web services actually run
over TCP .NET remoting for speed.

Product Highlights:

* zero-footprint Visual Studio .NET web controls

* web Service API designed after the OLE DB for OLAP, Java OLAP, and XML
for Analysis specifications

* rich Microsoft .NET class library for building MDX queries
programmatically

* new Expression Builder Control is a revolutionary user interface for
building advanced queries

* save data analyses as objects into any meta data repository including
Windows and enterprise portals

* built in charting with 38 chart types

* supports use of static and parameterized custom MDX scripts

Most likely reason is Yukon, everyone is going to need to re-write when
it eventually comes out and that's going to cost a lot of money. Better
to save the clams till then. Have you had a look at enterprise blocks by
the way it at least lets you use ASP.NET and then extend their controls,
worth a quick look.

Good luck

Just wanted to clarify that Yukon is backward compatible with Analysis
Services 2000. Therefore all the APIs that were supported in Analysis
Services 2000 will continue to work and will be supported with Yukon - i.e.
OLEDB for OLAP, XML for Analysis, MDX, ADOMD etc. There will be no need to
rewrite applications, unless they want to take advantages of new Yukon
features.

Have a look at O2OLAP for Excel. We have been getting some good feedback
