Default Microsoft Reporting Services Vs Cognos ReportNet - 07-22-2004 , 02:57 PM

I just delivered a project in reporting services. And I was looking at
the demo CD for Cognos ReportNet. It seemed like they are very
similar... In other words... I had pretty much all the functionality
in Reporting Services... that Cognos ReportNet offers...

Do other cognos developers feel the same way?

Has anyone done that comparison?

I normally see comparison with Crystal Reports...

Thx

Hello Harsh,

ReportNet offers ad hoc analysis with the tool Query Studio. Report Design
can fully be done in a Web based environment (your browser). ReportNet
furthermore has quite strong support for SAP BW/NetWeaver. ReportNet has
higher flexibility and control over layout. ReportNet has a kind of meta
layer between the data source and the end user data objects, etc., etc.,
etc. Although ReportNet also is quite a new product you can see that Cognos
has some more years of experience than MS in this area. You still need to
decide if this is worth the license fees.

Kind regards,

Joerg

What does the ReportNet Meta layer do? RS also has an elaborate
Repository that store the report definition and cached reports. Is it
any different?

Microsoft recently bought a company called 'active views'. That's a
fully web based report designing tool for reporting services.

How does ReportNet support SAP BW/NetWeaver? I have used SAP BW as a
dimensional model and then used it to create Analysis Services Cubes.
The performance/ functionality was much better that way...

I am not sure how much more flexible in layout can you be with
ReportNet. I watched the demo and it seemed the same (if not less)
that reporting services.

This I agree - Reporting Services is not ad hoc. For ad hoc, Microsoft
depends on analysis services cubes with clients like Proclarity.

You are right. Microsoft does have less experience than Cognos in this
field... but I think they are going to catch up... with the start of
Yukon.

PS
Organization does have challenges about taking data out of SAP.
Specially because SAP consultants start feeling threatned. Anyhow...
that's consulting.

Harsh,

Thank you very much for this information. My colleagues and I tested
literally all front ends for SAP BW and never got more than five
simultaneously working on one single patchlevel of BW. Therefore I can just
recommend to any organization that want to report on SAP BW with a third
party software to insist on prooven (maybe certified) technology and on
special maintenance agreements. SAP MDX is not Microsoft MDX and MDX is the
communication layer of ODBO, OLAP BAPI and XMLA.

Kind regards,

Joerg
