Default How should we run our business reports? - 09-08-2003 , 07:13 AM

Could someone help me with my problem, please?

My company uses DataEase for Windows for tracking its orders. I would
like to produce a monthly report that summarises where all the
business came from. At the moment, we are exporting the information
from DataEase, then importing it into Excel. Then someone has to play
around with the data a bit (to check for new agents, etc.) and produce
a chart using Excel's charting feature.

This all feels a bit too manual, especially when we want to run a
variation of the chart. Is there any easier and more automated way of
doing it? Ideally, we would have a web-solution, which would allow
staff members to produce and collect reports from the Intranet
whenever they need them.

Hi John,

there are tools available that ease the work of creating standard reports.
They are called reporting tools and some of them require the data to be
available in some kind of relational or multidimensional data store,
sometimes called a data warehouse or data mart. You haven't said how many of
your colleagues receive the reports since implementing such a data store and
using reporting tools could be overkill for you since they require serious
investments in labor and license fees. So I'd recommend you give us some
more information about the data and user volumes and how many reports are
being built.

Kind regards,

Joerg

John;

Sounds like you need a DataEase engineer? Really, you should be able
to design a report to present what you need. I assume you are just
using the File/Export command to create your export. You could either
create an attractive report in DataEase, or design a custom export
that does your agent checking on the fly.

If you have version 6 or greater, you can move your data to a Windows
IIS server and have access to your data via the web. Version 6.5 is
out shortly and has a long awaited "OLE DB" which would all you to
gain access to your data directly (e.g.) from Excell (that is, the
data is live, no need to do an export). That lets you use Crystal
Reports or other packages where you might be more familure with report
creation.

There is more information at my site www.advantease.com.
