Default How to Learn OLAP & ETL in 5 days? - 07-07-2006 , 09:38 PM

Hi everyone,

Althoug I know the science of data analysis very very well, but want to
know how to use OLAP and ETL!

First, is it possible to do so in few days? Any online reference or
book? Any helpful advice?

Thanks,
Mike

Try finding "The Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit" for the ETL piece. As for
OLAP i'm not sure of a good resource.

What is the difference between the two? I mean, is either enough?

Sorry for not replying until July 11. I guess you have only one day left, eh?

You need to learn three things in my idiosyncratic opinion:

1) How to do "slice-and-dice" analyses of hypercubes including basic
concepts such as measures and functions, dimensions and hierarchies, and
roll-up (aggregation) and drill-down (disaggregation).

2) How to structure or at least understand dimensional databases, whether
cubes or star schemas, and also how to work with operational data stores
(ODSes) that are structured in normalized forms.

3) How to get data into the DBs, that is, ETL, and in some cases, how to
define "business objects," that is, cubes defined on top of non-cube data
sources such as star schemas and ODSes.

For (1), I suggest downloading the Tableau trial at
http://tableausoftware.com. For (2), start with The Data Warehouse Toolkit.
You'll learn about cubes if you choose to use a product that relies on
them. And you'll learn (3) after you learn (2) and look at available ETL
products.

Perhaps one of the best way is go to a BI vendor and play their
OLAP/ETL product demos online:

Here I have one for your test drive:

Oracle has a complete DW/BI solution.
And all their products and documents are downloadable.
Best resources for ETL/OLAP and more.
