Default Free OLAP Solution - 03-16-2005 , 03:57 AM

Goodmorning,

I'm a beginner in OLAP solution and I'm training on Microsoft SQL
Server Analysis Services.
I like OLAP capabilities but I'd like to find some cheaper solution.

If someone knows some free OLAP engine or alternative solution please
contact me.

Thanks at all,

Shrike

Hi,

If you do have Excel you can make your own cube files and use this as
OLAP in Excel or even in ReportPortal. www.reportportal.com

If you can wait till may 2005, than there is a free OLAP server for
Linux available. www.opensourceolap.org

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mondrian/

I'm running it right this minute for a project with no software budget.

I know that http://openi.sourceforge.net/ uses mondrian and it appears
to work pretty well. However it does not yet have all the user friendly
admin GUI's of MS SQLServer but it shows a lot of potential.

Hi

OpenI is more of a reporting front end which sits on top of eithe
Analysis Services or the open source ROLAP tool mondrian.

I would recommend you look at a new open source olap server called Pal
(www.opensourceolap.com or www.palo.net) - at present there is a previe
version available for download.

Palo is a MOLAP server so values can be written back directly to RAM
This is preferential to servers such as Analysis services which use
relational writeback table (they have to resort to a mixture of MOLA
and ROLAP to show the latest values - even proactive caching i
Analysis Services 2005 doesn't overcome this, although it helps
little).

Due to the direct writeback Palo is ideal for planning and uses such a
budgeting and forecasting software.

Although not available in the preview release the roadmap shows it wil
include the ability to write rules (anologous to calculated members i
AS). However since Palo is a RT-OLAP system you don't have to wait fo
cubes to be processed or end up wasting space storing calculation
which might never be used, since in this environment calculations an
done on an as needed basis.

Why not download it and try for yourself, you soon realise how creatin
a dimension and cube in this software are so much more simple than usin
something such as analysis services. The excel addin makes creatin
cubes simple and provides a familiar and comfortable environment fo
most end users. The more technical users might be cringing at th
thought of using excel, however they shouldn't be put off since Pal
provides APIs in lanaguages such as C, Java, PHP and .Net

I would recommend any Business Intelligence (BI) developer
practitioner or end user to give it a try
