Default ESSbase ESSCMD EXPORT and PAREXPORT - 01-28-2004 , 09:05 PM

We were planning on using the ESSCMD EXPORT and/or PAREXPORT commands to
extract data from several ESSbase databases. We have been told by the
administrator of one of the systems that we will not be allowed to perform
the exports because the EXPORT command locks the database and blocks all
other activity while it is being performed. Is this in fact the case? What
other alternatives are there for pulling large amounts of data from ESSbase
cubes without negatively impacting the ESSbase systems?

It depends on the version of Essbase you are using. Essbase 6.5.4 allows
read-only access on databases that are being exported.

Should I assume by your comment that prior to 6.5.4, EXPORT block access to
the database? Is this also true of PAREXPORT?

You assume correctly - prior versions of Essbase would basically freeze the
database - I don't remember if users would get a message indicating the DB
was busy, or if it would just be so slow they would get timed out trying to
connect to it.

This applies to PAREXPORT as well as EXPORT - regardless of how the export
is initiated.
